CO2 reactor confusion.

Posted: March 20th, 2007 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | 1 Comment »

I’ve changed the layout of my external CO2 reactor’s position and hopefully now, the CO2 dispersion and breakdown will be better.

At just 2 bubbles-per-second (BPS) in the bubble counter, the pH reading from the ADA drop checker was showing 6.4 to 6.6 which was a bit ridiculous. My previous layout was probably inefficient and instead of breaking down the CO2 bubbles, I was merely wasting the CO2.

Ridiculous weather = Jebao fan.

Posted: March 19th, 2007 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | 1 Comment »

I just purchased a four-blade Jebao cooler fan for my tank. The weather has lately been ridiculously warm & humid. The current temperature of my tank is now at 28.3 degrees celcius.

With the fan, I expect a drop of at least 2~4 degrees celcius.

Teo’s plant farm visit.

I went down to Teo’s with my wife & her colleague. (I’m sure Don was excited to see all the different plants :) ) Located at the end of Singapore, Teo’s plant farm is a must visit for the aquascaper. Have a wide range of varieties that most LFS won’t have. I purchased a total of 5 different plants.

Here’s a photo of what my purchase.

Visit to Teo’s plant farm. (18.03.207)

Posted: March 17th, 2007 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | No Comments »

I’ll be taking a visit down to Teo’s plant farm (over at Lim Chu Kang – which happens to be at the other end of where I’m currently living at) tomorrow with a friend and hopefully with my wife too. I’ll update you guys with the purchases that I will get.

Currently on my mind are the following purchases.

1. Japanese hairgrass
2. Bolbitis
3. and whatever I might want to get. :P

I’ll post up photos of my purchases.

Formerlly known as Microrasbora sp ‘Galaxy’, now as Celestichthys margaritatus.

Posted: March 13th, 2007 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | 3 Comments »

I just purchased 10 microrasbora sp. Galaxy from a local LFS and planning to breed them in time to come. Recently there was an article by practicalfishkeeping (UK) on the microrasbora sp. ‘galaxy’ coming to extinction due to over-collection since its first discovery in early 2006.

I will be posting more on the celestichthys margaritatus and hopefully will take a photo of two of them.

Check back to see if this article has been updated. If possible, it would be good if the microrasbora galaxies can be home bred.

I’ve opened a new section to the site, titled “Algae-cide”. This section will hold a database of algae issues that I have personally faced and of course, a solution to its cause.

You can access Algae-cide via the link at the header menu or by clicking here.

2 dead zebra otos.

Posted: March 11th, 2007 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | No Comments »

My zebra otos are dead. :(

This is the problem with otos. As long as they are established in the LFS tank, there won’t be any problems having them in yours. I rushed into getting them and now they’re in a better place I guess.

I’ll keep a look out at the LFS where I purchased the otos from and then will get the remaining survivors.

Soon-to-have, new 2 footer tank.

Posted: March 9th, 2007 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | No Comments »

Most folks that I know who aquascape actually start off with a small tank and then work their way up, however in my case, I was pretty much the opposite, I started out aquascaping with a five-footer and now, for my second tank, I’m planning to start up a 40 gallon tank or rather 2 footer. This tank will reside in my current room and I’ll be housing shrimps of various species/variations and maybe some smaller shaoling fishes like harlequin rasboras or maybe a school of red-line rasboras.

Here’s the latest installment of my tank, 34 days after its major rescape. I recently added zebra otos and a juvenile farowella acus.

Apologies for the crappy photo, that’s the best I could do from the O2 Zinc. :P

Pearl pigeon / tank rescape update + Eden 501 manual.

Posted: March 8th, 2007 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year!, Site-related | No Comments »

Apologies for the lack of updates lately, been rather busy with work actually. The four pearl pigeons are doing exceptionally well and have been actively moving about and of course rushes to be first in queue to have their daily meals.

It’s rather soothing to see that all of the discus (old & new) are living well together with a bit of bickering here and there. The alpha male definitely shows his authority, especially during feeding time. The tank is currently establishing itself well however I’ve yet to plant the new foreground plants ever since my school of rummy noses finished off the original idea of having a hemianthus callitrichoides foreground. Come to think of it, I have other additions to the tank in terms of flora additions.
