Update of tank & stuff.

Posted: April 25th, 2006 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | No Comments »

BGA 0 vs. Me. 1 – I finally won the battle with BGA (I do hope that this is a permanent fixture). I introduced a 4 day black-out period to my tank. However before that I did the following.

  • Cleaned both filters
  • Scraped the pre-existing BGA
  • Siphoned 50% of the water and cleaned the affected gravel

I then proceeded to tape up the entire tank and lined it well with old copies of newspaper. I ensured that NO trace of light could penetrate the tank. I however did not have any air pump so in return I lowered the tank’s water so that the spray-bar can provide the much-needed air bubbles.

4 days later on Sunday, I removed the paper and was saddened to find the following casualties.

  • 1 x Red Mellon
  • 2 x Neon Tetras
  • 1 x pygmy glassfish

The plants suffered as well, however the B.G.A sufferred more! No more B.G.A was in sight! I then proceeded to wash both the filters again, performed a 60% water change, fluffed up all the dead spots, dirt, etc. Trimmed the plants, refilled the water, gave a generous dose of KNO3 & KH2PO4.

After a couple of hours the water cleared up. :) So far after 3 days since the major clean-up, I’ve yet to spot any trace of the B.G.A (crosses fingers) as I would HATE to have to tape up the tank once again.

TECH UPDATE

I just bought the O2 XDA Atom and traded in my O2 XDA 2 Mini.

S$688 burnt away… *sigh*. Anyways before getting the phone I read up quite a bit on the phone-cum-PDA and was shocked to see ratings of 2/10. So far the phone isn’t acting up and there’s no such “buzzing” noise as reviewed by the lot at CNET (ASIA).

Anyways, I have been using O2 products since its launch of the O2 XDA II (yes the big bulky one) and then the O2 XDA II mini and now the Atom, so far so good, no complaints from me.. yet.

Collection of my prize, Eden 501 filter.

Posted: April 16th, 2006 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | No Comments »

I went down to Biotope Aquarium to collect my prize. I was supposed to be there by 2pm however due to torrential rains here in Bedok, the streets were flooded, likewise the pavements. I should have taken a few photos due to the rarity of having any floods in Singapore. I saw pedestrians walking in knee high waters.

Anyways, back to the collection process. I reached Biotop only at 3pm, an hour late. I was rather embarrased but the kind folks that being Thio (the owner of Biotope), Benny and Solonavi (the other Eden 501 winner) were graceful enough to greet me. The critters at Biotope had little tanks to themselves, the apistos. I saw a pair of German-bred apisto going for S$600! I did not know that apistos could cost THAT much! I then saw the entry-level apistos going for a more reasonable prize of S$12 per pair. I might get a pair, considering my tank has LOTS of hiding space for them.

Anyways, Benny took a couple of photos of us and Thio in the prize giving ‘ceremony’. Here are the rest of the photos of the Eden 501 filter.

Estimative Index – revamped.

After trying out Tom Barr's Estimative Index I am a firm believer as I have seen my dying plants flourish after trying out his methods. I have come up with a revamped EI-Schedule. Hopefully this will bring out the best of the plants that I have now. :)

You may wish to download the schedule I have here.

Blue diamond.

Posted: April 9th, 2006 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | No Comments »

The latest addition to my 5 footer. A pair of blue diamond discus. I’ve always been amazed by the blue diamond, for their sheer striking blue and their blood red eyes. Again I got these pair for a steal! :) They’re the biggest amongst the lot of discus I current have housed in the tank.

Currently with 9 in the tank, I’ll let things be for the time being until I can manage to find the green german discus. One of my all-time favourites! Just image a leopard skin discus but instead of it being red, its a green, a flaming green discus! I remembered my dad having one of those when I was much younger. It was his prized discus. From what I know, its pretty rare and chances of getting it at reasonably prized might be impossible. Well, anyways, enjoy the photos. :D

Acclimatizing the temperature.

After 2 hours, getting used to its new environment.

Parting shot.

Meeting the rest of the ‘gang’.

Frolicking.

Swimming around the forest of hairgrass.

My latest attractions of the tank.

2 x 2028! Finally!

Posted: April 8th, 2006 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | No Comments »

I’ve finally purchased the second EHIEM Professional II 2028 filter. I decommissoned the other Jebao filter. Did a 60% water changed. So far two casualties, that being a puffer and a pygmy glass fish.

The discus are feeding well so far. They seem that have established themselves in the tank, with the other critters pretty much fearing them. I still however would like to fish out the black widows, congos & danios, but am having problems catching them. Until a MAJOR rescape should take place with all the plants yanked out, I will have to wait I guess.

In my shopping cart today was a surface-skimmer. I previously removed the skimmer on the other Jebao filter after decomissioning it and after seeing the protein layer for the past week, I am unable to stand the sight of that oily sludge floating above the waters. I guess the photosysthesis was in a way affected due to it blocking out some of the light. Anyways that’s solved. :)

Now, to wait for the bacteria colony to settle itself down in the filters.

Lucky me. The Eden filter is mine!

Posted: April 8th, 2006 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | No Comments »

I’ve won the 2nd set of the Eden 501 External canister filter give away contest!. Never have I won any lucky draw, this is the very first time I have won. Amazing!

Benny from AQ was the one who told me the good news when he called me. The prizes are sponsored by Biotope LFS. Good on them for sponsoring this amazing external filter, now I can start on that Nano tank project that I always wanted to! Alternatively, I was thinking since I have yet to hook up the chiller, this might prove to be a good pre-filter before the chiller, however at 300l/hour, it would not be sufficient to provide a good flow throughout the entire chiller thus incurring a large electrical bill.

Here’s the post on AQ annoucing my win: http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum/showpost.php?p=175930&postcount=57

….after one month.

Posted: April 4th, 2006 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | No Comments »

It’s been a month and 1 day since I did the major rescape of my tank. In between this one month, I faced some challenges along the way. From the B.G.A that attacked my gravel line, a cloudy water issue and the addition of the aquarium king, the discus.

I present you the latest comparison digital photograph of my tank, a month and a day later (not the most professional, but this will suffice).

Latest addition to the aquatic “family”.

Posted: April 2nd, 2006 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | 2 Comments »

I’ve decided to give the two brown discuses I have currently in my tank its own brothers & sisters to school around with. I bought a total of 5 pigeon’s blood and red melon strains at a steal. Although they’re not from championship parents, their body shapes are nice and look healthy enough for my liking.

Once home, I proceeded to float the bag for about 2 hours to acclimatize the tank’s temperature and the temperature of the bag. I proceeded to pour them into a large bucket and for the next 45 minutes, introduced water from my tank by using the “drip” method. This certainly helped to lessen the stress when transferring them from the bucket to their new home.

Currently the two earlier inhabitants are starting to show their prowess by bullying all the seven new members. Chasing, nipping and the likes. Anyways, as with all members of the cichild family, what is life without a bit of squabbling yeah? :P

Here are the new inhabitants, couldn’t take all the five together as they were hiding in the forest of vallisneria (natans). Hope you’ll like the pictures and if anyone can I.D the strain, please leave a comment, will definitely appreciate it. :)

Probably still getting use to its surroundings.

Managed to get this quickshot before he/she went hiding in the forest again.

The two “kings” and the few hiding in the forest of vallisneria.

Another red mellon discus.

S$288

Posted: April 1st, 2006 | Author: grey_fox | Filed under: Oldies - post of yester-year! | No Comments »

S$288/= My latest buy. Eheim Professional II 2028 model. Bought this at Nature Aquarium. Was actually contemplating (see below post) on whether should i buy the Pro III instead, decided not to after Benny from AQ recommended the 2028 model instead.

This fella came with all the media for a purposeful biological filter, Efhimech, substrat pro and the likes. Worth the investment since this hobby of mine is going full scale.

There is only one 2028 left at N.A. Will wait till new stock arrives to N.A.

Eheim Professional II 2028

Eheim Professional II 2028 primed and running :)
Since I’m writing this post out, I might as well give an update that my pair of brown discuses are finally eating! :D
